Newly-Minted Harris-Walz Ticket: A Team of Strong D.C. Statehood Supporters

By: Miriam Edelman

The brand new Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is a strong team of supporters of D.C. statehood.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) endorsed Harris and supports the new Democratic duo. NOW’s July 21, 2024, endorsement of Harris said:

And now, as President Biden passes the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, we look forward to electing a Black and Indian woman president and finally crashing that last glass ceiling over the White House.  Kamala Harris will speak to what women want and need in this election—a champion for their rights—including reproductive rights—and a fighter for democracy itself.

In an August 24, 2024, statement, NOW’s President Christian F. Nunes said, “With Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, we have a team of proven fighters for women, fierce defenders of abortion rights, and accomplished leaders with a record of delivering for the people”

This newly-minted Democratic ticket supports statehood for D.C. Both Harris and Walz co-sponsored Congressional legislation that would have granted D.C. statehood. In 2018, Harris was a co-sponsor, and in 2019, she was an original co-sponsor. In 2017, Walz was as an original sponsor during his final term in Congress. As D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser posted on X recently, “Vice President Kamala Harris for the People.  Our next President supports DC, our autonomy and DC Statehood.”

It is essential that D.C. become the nation’s 51st state. Congress’s pervasive interference in local D.C. issues, including preventing a D.C.-government passed bill from becoming law for the first time in decades, shows that statehood is crucial.
