Our Work

Abortion Provider Non-Discrimination Amendment Act

This bill will build on CM Grosso's abortion access protection bill that he introduced last session as well as prepare legal safeguards to be in place if the Supreme Court makes a significant change to Roe v. Wade.

The bill is being marked up now by legal experts and direct service providers with input from a coalition. A communications plan is being developed by the rest of the coalition including DC NOW.

Implement the Sexual Assault Victims’ Rights Amendment Act (SAVRAA) 2019

SAVRAA 2014 gave survivors the right to a confidential, community-based advocate for all survivors and sought to reform how MPD handled sexual assault cases.

SAVRAA 2019 expands the rights to an advocate and promotes a more survivor-centered approach. Want to get involved? Email president@dc-now.org to obtain more information and learn how you can help survivors in DC.

Call for MPD to implement the NEAR Act!

The Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results Amendment (NEAR) Act was passed and funded but hasn't been implemented by Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

We are asking our DC NOW members to attend their local Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) meeting and share this NEAR Act doc and tell your neighbors why MPD needs to start implementing the NEAR Act now.

Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019

DC NOW is considering a bill sponsored by CM Grosso that will strive to decriminalize sex work done by adults (trafficking remains illegal). There is a longstanding disagreement on issue between sex worker and sex trafficking advocacy groups. The bill has not yet had a hearing scheduled and DC NOW is collecting research and information to make an informed decision.
